Exhibit Spotlight: 1967 World Scout Jamboree
During the Summer of 1967, the Boy Scouts of the World would descend upon Farragut State Park for the very first World Scout Jamboree to be held in America. This would be a touchstone event for the park, which would go on to host National Scout Jamborees for the Boy Scouts of America in the future. Here at the World Scouting Museum, we are lucky to host many items from the Jamboree that help to tell the story of the event.
One of our favorite pieces above is the advertising posters for the Jamboree, gotta have the McDonald’s sponsorship here in the United States. The theme for this Jamboree was “For Friendship,” which attracted 12,011 Scouts from 105 countries.
This Jamboree coincided with the British Scouts Diamond Jubilee year and saw 1,300 Scouts from the U.K. attend in their new Uniforms, a true sight to behold. With the special British guests, including World Chief Guide Olave Baden-Powell and the wife of Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell, also in attendance. This World Jamboree was the subject of an ABC Television Special featuring Celebrity Jimmy Stewart. Another special guest was Vice President of the United States Hubert Humphrey. Scott Carpenter, former Astronaut, also attended the Jamboree. At the time, Farragut State Park had been a park since 1950, but previously had been Farragut Naval Training Station and Farragut College and Technical Institute.
An American favorite would go worldwide at this Jamboree; the PB&J Sandwich would be shared with Scouts from around the World! Now the PB&J sandwich is a worldwide favorite, but at this Jamboree it was a homegrown original! Other food was available as well for the Scouts to try
The Jamboree hosted the 2nd playing of the Wide Game, played with members from around the world. It also featured a Rodeo for Scouts to enjoy as well. Ultimately, the Jamboree focused on forging new friendships with Scouts from around the World.
Farragut State Park would host many Scouting events in its history, starting with the National Girl Scout Senior Roundup in 1965, the World Scout Jamboree in 1967, the National Scout Jamboree in 1969 % 1973, and the 2002 Star Northwest of the BSA.
